Node A: The Meet (top)

the target

The fixer has arranged a meet, and the group and the Johnson (a middle-aged Japanese man in a blue suit) are now around a table in a back room at The Cutting Edge, a strip club and bar in the University District. The job is an extraction, and it's time-sensitive. The baseline price is ((3,000¥ + (2,000¥ * TR)) * (Number of PCs). That's 20,000¥ if everyone shows. However, the Johnson will wish to negotiate using his Charisma 5 + Negotiation 5. He also has a rating 4 Mitsuhama "Revered Ancestor" model emotitoy that clings to his left shoulder and whispers in his ear (providing 4 bonus dice for judging intentions, negotiating, or other social interaction).

Jason Magoy is a molecular biologist who lives in Bellvue close to the Redmond border. In six days his company MRC, Inc. will go public with a new invention. Mr. Johnson needs the man kidnapped (alive) within the next two days so he can extract information about the new invention and get the jump on MRC by having his company release early.

Jason's girlfriend, Shari Ellen Wilcomb, is a hair stylist. She lives in Bellevue as well. Magoy works for MRC: Molecular Research Company, Inc. in Everett.

Node B: The Single Helix Club (top)

The Single Helix is always bumpin', jumpin', grindin', and rewindin'. One troll and one human bouncer watch the door and a beautiful elven woman collects the 20¥ cover charge. Drinks are at least 6.50¥ each, and can go as high as the buyer wants. The music thumps a primal beat as men and women in day-glo paint gyrate to the sound. Though it's not a private club, the trolls at the door will reject any females with a charisma of 3 or less, and any males with Charisma 5 or less.

Clue 1: Magoy's brother, who goes by the name Axis Mundi but whose real name is Frank Magoy, is 15 years younger and 45 years hipper than the scientific older brother. He's here most nights and knows that his brother is hiding out in a Renton apartment. It'll be hard to pull the information from him though. Money won't do it, only extreme fear, and he'll have silently alerted Lone Star the momemt he felt a twinge of fright.
Clue 2: Shari Wilcomb is a regular. On any given week night there's a 25% chance she'll be here. That jumps to 75% on the weekends. She also knows where Jason is, but she'll die before she'll tell unless there's some sort of chemical assistance to the interrogation.
Clue 3: Jason himself might put in an appearance (10%) though he'll be in his disguise requiring a Perception + Intuition (4) test to pierce. The following modifiers apply: partial light (-0 to -2), distraction (-2), target not in immediate vicinity (-2). If spotted he will go behind the bar and disappear into a bolthole, exiting in the alley behind the dumpster. If not spotted, and if the PCs have been actively asking about him, he will find out and try to learn more about them by striking up a conversation.

Node C: The Girlfriend (top)

Shocked by Jason's predicament, Shari has changed her hair and makeup to reflect her inner fears. If asked she'll say it's because she knows he's dead. "She can just feel it." She actually knows about his Renton safe house, but will not tell even under fear of death. Jason gave her back her self-respect after a bad break up and has always treated her well. Despite what Mr. Saski thinks, her love for the old man is deep and real.

Clue 1: There are several matchbooks from the Single Helix club in her nightstand.
Clue 2: The closet holds a lab coat from MRC, Inc. Jason wore it over during lunch one day and it got some lipstick on the collar. It's back from the clearners and fine now, but Jason has been unable to walk freely enough to pick it up.
Clue 3: Mr. Sasaki wrote Shari an email warning her not to get too attached to "the old lech" because he wouldn't stay around long. It's still in her account (a rating 3 commlink with no IC).

Node D: MRC, Inc. (top)

MRC, Inc. is a busy place, but most of its activity takes place behind closed lab doors so it looks to be very sedate. It's current management places more value on what's happening now than protecting against what might happen in the future. As such the security doesn't quite match the value of what's being worked on there.

Clue 1: Jason's computer has an email in the outbox whose only text is "1421 E Fardrive Apt 32B." It was sent to Adamantium Shield X, an address that is no longer active.
Clue 2: A Knowledge (security) check indicates that the building could be somewhat easy to breach. A knowledge (corp-related) check indicates that it would have a lot of high tech paydata.
Clue 3: Jason has a copy of Mr. Sasaki's threatening email that shari forwarded to him.

Node E: The Snatch (top)

1421 E Fardrive Apt 32B is a fancy apartment complex off of the 405. Magoy chose it because it is less than half a kilometer from the Knight-Errant Training Facility, and he hopes that will make people think twice before coming in guns blazing. 32B is on the second floor in the middle of the hallway, and most of the time Magoy will be there, working on his neurotransmitter. Once it's finished he'll be able to pay for full time security instead of having to undergo the current ruse.

Ever the pragmatist, he and his body double will be in full disguise day and night. The two hired guns will be playing the part of hired guns. Adamantium Shield X appears as himself.

Surrounding the room is a Force 4 Charged Astral Ward. Seeing the ward with Astral Perception is automatic, but determining that it is a charged ward rather than a normal ward requires a successful Assensing + Intuition (3) test. If it is breached without fooling it the creator will be alerted and will send a Force 6 Beast Spirit to the apartment with orders to defend anyone in the security company's armor. It will arrive one combat turn after the alarm is breached.

Clue 1: You got your man. (sorta)

Node F: Revelation (top)

The runners have captured who they think is the target and arranged a meet with the Johnson. Hoever, when the Johnson arrives he's disgusted at their failure. It seems they've captured a ringer.

Clue 1: If they reach a dead end and are unsure of where to go next, an appropriate contact (likely a fixer) will call with an offer of infomation from a snitch.
Clue 2: Or, alternatively and perhaps simultaneously, Magoy himself will call with an offer of a bribe.
Clue 3: Finally, they may decide to retrace their footsteps and run over old ground looking for new clues.

Node G: Snitch (top)

The call will come through an appropriate contact (most likely a fixer, but not the fixer who originally set up the run unless he's the only option). A member of Magoy's protection team has racked up some major gambling debts and is looking to settle a few of them. For 1,500¥ Deandre Nickolson will tell them where Magoy is now. For 3,000¥ he'll arrange for Magoy to move so they can catch him in transit. The prices are negotiable using the snitch's 5-die pool. Deandre considers himself to be a worldly man, but he's really juse mean-hearted. Jealousy of Magoy's girlfriend situation is the reason his greed is outweighing his fear of getting caught.

Clue 1: He tells them Magoy is at the offices of Shield Security if they pay him.
Clue 2: In the background a perceptive listener (Perception (Hearing) + Intuition 4) can hear a discussion being made that involves offering the hunters a bribe.
Clue 3: If they don't want the help, there's no way forward but to go back.
Clue 4: If Deandre recognizes "Daddy" from the news at the meet, he'll talk a little about it. It's clear he's not disgusted by the thought of men with little girls, and he'll privately offer "Daddy" a web address and password to a child pornography website with red level clearance.

Node H: Proffered Bribe (top)

Adamantine Shield X (unless he's dead) calls one of the runners to offer a 25,000¥ bribe. It's all that Jason can pull together, and so is not negotiable. The bribe will be paid in two days, after the neurotransmitter launch goes public. But only if Jason is free and unmolested until that time.

Clue 1: A voice in the background is recognized as the snitch.
Clue 2: The bribe can be picked up at the offices of Shield Security if the terms have been met.
Clue 3: If they don't want the extra cash or the snitch's intel, the only way forward is back.

Node I: Retracing Footsteps (top)

If they won't take the proffered bribe or buy the information, all they can do is go back and start digging again.

Clue 1: A trace on Magoy's credit can see that he bought rooms at the Gates Undersound hotel (the opposing system is rating 5, triggering an alarm causes a possible trace back to the runner's locale and a visit from the fuzz.
Clue 2: Frank / Axis Mundi knows that his brother is hiding out at the Gates Undersound hotel. Hacking his commlink, raiding his room, or interrogating him can all find out the room number.
Clue 3: If Shari was accosted, she will also be at thee Gates Undersound. If not, she'll be at her apartment. Either way, ransacking her place or digitally ransacking her comm link can find Magoy.

Node J: The Real Magoy (top)

With his bribe refused, Jason has nothing left to do with the money but spend it on 2 days in the penthouse of the Gates Undersound Hotel where he hides behind its high security walls. Protection includes several rating 6 sensors, and fast-response team of off-duty KE police less than a minute away, two ex-Tir Ghost security personel ready to respond to any alarm, and rating 6 maglock passkeys on both the doors and elevator. Attentive guards monitor the cameras and motion detectors at all times.

Node K: Payday? (top)

Hopefully by this point the runners have either captured Jason or made a deal with him. If they made the deal their payday is much larger, and it will be deposited or delivered as previously agreed. However Mr. Johnson, the assitant governer of Seattle, will be very upset with them and it's quite possible he's seen their faces.

If they did not make the deal, their coffers are lighter but their heads are safer. However, it's possible that Shari may have seen one or more of them, in which case she'll put her small but not insignificant resources towards hiring a team of runners to extract her revenge.

Node L: Side Job (top)

MRC, Inc. has been pouring their funds into new development and relying on their reputation as a secure facility to keep people at bay. But a detailed look or a little digging through the shadows can determine that the facility's defenses are lower than they used to be. As a high tech research faclity, it's bound to hold some nice paydata for anyone that can get in and get it out (either digitally or by snatching the servers themselves). The defenses arrayed against an intruder are:

The payoff ranges from 10,000¥ to 30,000¥, depending on how much of the paydata is liberated. There are 3 servers, each of which would be a heavy load for a troll. Getting the hard drives out makes the load much lighter, but requires a Logic + Hardware (8, 1 minute) test for each server. A glitch during the process damages a sector of the drive, halving its value. A critical glitch destroys the drive completely.

Node M: Satan's Playground (top)

Satan's Playground is a red level matrix node where pedophiles meet to chat, share files, and sometimes arrange for even less tasteful things. It is known to many law enforcement agencies, but they have so far been unable to crack its server. The password that Deandre provides will give the user access, and also infect their commlink with silent rating 4 spyware unless the system succeeds at an opposed test using its Firewall + system vs. the spyware's rating x 2. The spyware sits idle and only looks for communication with known law-enforcement agency numbers or nodes. At that point it will try to crash the system (Rating x 2 vs. Firewall + system). When rebooted, all will appear find but the device will periodicaly send a bogus 9-1-1 call to draw a Knight Errant patrol to the user's location.

Stall I: Why would daddy do that? (top)

One of the PCs notices another of the PCs' face on the trid. It's a crude sketch, but recognizable. The PC on the trid will be the one who rolls the lowest in an Edge test for the group. Beside the picture is a talking head interviewing a social worker and a little girl (about 7 years old). The little girl is using vague phrases to describe the bad things her daddy did to her. As her sweetly innocent smile fades into the background the newsman launches into a diatribe against child abuse in general and sexual child abuse in particular. The sketch goes full screen and he implores the viewers to keep an eye out for this degenerate and others like him. A matrix address is provided for people to view known sex offenders's pictures and report sghtings of any that are listed as wanted.

Stall II: Cheezits! The Fuzz! (top)

One wrong step when dealing with Satan's Playground could send the police crashing through the doors like vengeance come to life. The recent news stories have given Knight Errant a black eye and they're looking to prove themselves. A target with a profile as high as the one on the news would go a long way towards relieving some pressure on Seattle's new security forces. A quick capture followed by the revelation that the news ran with the story before telling the police and a "but we caught him as soon as we knew about him" would leave KE with some warm fuzzies. If they can get a location on the suspect (they've issued a 500¥ reward), they'll send four patrol officers and a lieutenant to make the arrest. If they have reason to believe the suspect is dangerous they will send eight squad members and aerial support. If the subject is magically active a magician and a spirit will replace two of the patrolmen. Use the grunt stats for Lone Star police (SR4A 282). The spirit will be a Force 4 spirit of Fire with Search as its optional power. Aerial support consists of a LEBD-1 (Arsenal p. 120) and a Kawasaki Gargoyle Attack Helicopter (As Aguilar, Arsenal p. 115-116).

If a firefight ensues, their goal will b to drive the suspect towards lower income districts where the aerial support and officers can open up without fear of harming honest tax payers.

Stall III: Gangbanger Chaos (top)

As the runners head downtown to meet with or capture Magoy, the Halloweeners choose that moment to initiate some new members. Eight screaming gangers and their lieutenant (SR4A p. 282) blast through the downtown gates and start firing randomly into traffic. If they do nothing to interfere, two random runners will be the target of autofire from the gangs' Ceska Black Scorpions: 6 dice, -9defense, 4P. If they fight back, a battle will ensue, but the Hallloweeners will disappear down alleys when the police arrive 3 combat turns into it. This could result in a chase if the runners are seen to be firing illegal weaponry.
